Positive Reinforcement | How we Speak to Children

positive reinforcement

Ever feel like you have spent your whole day saying ‘don’t do that’ ‘stop that’?

As parents I think these must be our most said words. But have you ever thought about the impact they are having on you children.

If you are fed up of saying it don’t you think your children are fed of being told what they can’t and shouldn’t do. Have you have tried a more positive approach?

A simple change in phrase can make such a big difference.

Instead of stop hitting doesn’t use your kind hands sound such better?

I for one definitely think that it does and during my experience of working with children I can tell you that positive reinforcement tends to be a lot more successful.

The following phrases are perfect for some positive reinforcement.

For the child who likes to climb – Feet on the floor please

For the child who seems to have broken ears – Use your listen ears please

For the child who likes to throw toys – Push your cars on the floor please

For the child who likes to constantly run everywhere – Use your walking feet please

For the child who see’s all furniture as a climbing opportunity – Keep your feet on the floor please

As you can they are such simple changes to make and you find yourself sounding a lot more positive. The children are also being given some direction rather than constantly being told not to do something.

These are so helpful, thank you for sharing! Keep your feet on the floor please will be used most in our household.

Absolutely! Positive language is so important. The expectant thanks phrases are really useful too such as I’m really pleased to see you are using your listening ears or Thanks for keeping your feet on the floor!

So easy to forget these but it does work. Got to keep reminding parents this 🙂
